Recently, memories of the movie, The Big Blue, resurfaced. I do not remember every detail of the storyline, but I do remember, more importantly, the way the movie made me feel: at peace. I don't think another movie has ever translated the ocean so well. When I was land locked, I watched it religiously. It wasn't a success in the U.S (go figure) but hugely popular in France. This gets me to thinking, why was I born here? I am usually more aligned in my thought process with other nations. I wonder if France would take me in or Spain since I would fare better with the language there. I have been searching for a sign on whether I should tackle a jaunt to France in the coming months with my family. Once I read the reviews on one of my all time favorite movies, I chuckled out loud, the answer was clear: "go, go go". Thanks universe for spelling it out for me. It may sound crazy to love a nation because they embraced one of your favorite films, but if this movie changed your life like it did mine, you understand. Have a great weekend all, hope your answers come to you too.

See Leon Levenstein's photographs at the Metropolitan Museum of art, up through October 17th. I love the humanity he captures in his photographs. He was slammed in the New York times review of his work, all of which I find interesting. In a nutshell, his review found the work to literal, capturing odd ball characters instead of the hidden human moments detected only by the trained eye. Where there is art, there is always a critic. Why white? Because the world outside the home is moving fast. There are advertisements everywhere, street signs, billboards and even t.v. monitors on the gas pump now. Home needs to be the opposite of what we see in the city. Home needs to be clear, free, open, light and filled with possibility. One vase of flowers or a painting changes the look of the room. I am so in love with this and dream of serving pancakes from a open place like this one day. Don't get me wrong, my priorities are in line. I know that I am blessed even if I never get this kitchen. I know that there are people suffering and this kitchen should be the last thing on my mind in a world where the majority of people don't even have a home. So . . . let me say this, I love what the kitchen represents. I love the design. It is pretty and perhaps if more people could have a clean, clear place to think and dwell they could do more for the world that way. At least that is my way of making peace with my desire. It is bittersweet to see my girlfriend, Amy Kotch, pulling into waves like this. I miss her and the surf sessions we used to have. We would giggle and hoot each other on and were giddy to be in the ocean having fun. Then she moved away to the Maldives, fell madly in love with a New Zealand chap and is now long gone pulling into mad waves like the ones above. This swell is supposedly one of the best to ever hit the Maldives. So happy for you Ames, just wish I was there to cheer you on in person. I read that she snapped two boards during this session then borrowed a third and paddled back out. You are one amazing chic . . . thanks for inspiring us back home.

Hope you get taken by trees this weekend, the cd. This may be my favorite band name ever. Don't you wish the forest or the ocean would come looking for you sometimes? What if you were sad and a tree sat down beside you with its arm around you? Or if you did something great and the ocean handed you a trophy. How cool would that be? Well, since that may not happen for you without a lot of margaritas . . . try popping a Taken by Trees cd in instead. My favorite song is "day by day", on the East of Eden cd. One line of the song is: "I could hold you for a hundred years, take away your greatest fears." Reminds me of my little boy or young love. Here is a link to an Animal Collective cover by the band. So yesterday I had a total BP freak out. I listen to the news about how the company is trying to weasel out of paying victims, controlling air space to prohibit photographs of the spill and using toxic chemicals to hide oil that they really haven't been cleaning up. I have followed this cloesely since the beginning and I just feel like the world has gone mad. How is it possible that the government let the response to the spill proceed this way? Well, I am not pointing fingers at one politician, I think the whole system is whack. I wish there was a law against lying. A little bit of truth goes a long way. As for me I will just keep moving forward, (hence the art I have chosen today) but I have to accept that this spill has changed me profoundly and I am still processing my feelings on the issue. Are you?

Today was one of those days I have been longing for. A day surrounded by my favorite things: sun, ocean, good waves, love and friendship. I felt 100% like a this little girl, carefree, marching down the beach going to ride the waves with a full belly and plenty of energy. Somehow, the stars were in alignment for me when I paddled out because the most gorgeous set of the day swung wide and came directly at me. It was one of the longest I have ridden all year. I was laughing all the way to the beach, going so fast I could hardly hang on. I could have jumped off at any moment as I approached the pitching inside corner but not today. I pig dogged it & made it to the sand. Then a friend bought me lunch and I arrived home to find free clothes from a stylish girlfriend on my doorstep (thanks Heather) AND it started raining and thundering (MY FAVORITE). I declare this day and official gift to me and I thank God and all my friends for making it TERRIFIC. For one whole day, I forgot about all my worries & my age. Today I was about 8 years old and LOVED IT. Sorry for the gushing but seriously . . . it never happens quite like this. Hope tomorrow is your day.

Alex is like the Elvis of wave riding, introducing moves to surfing that break every rule. One might love the slow dance and the glide afforded by the longboard, but Alex, took that aesthetic and turned it all on its ass. There is so much going on with his feet, his body & his board that I found myself entranced when I surfed with him in Mexico years ago. He looks like he is dancing to an insane rock song on every wave, like his mind is tuned into a radio station that I can only dream of tuning into. It has been years since something inspired me in surfing. I feel like an old dog that has seen it all before over and over again. (Big yawn at all the testosterone driven ugly thrashing crap). That old way of surfing just isn't Alex. His approach is undoubtedly art driven and an almost anarchist revolt agains industry standards. Although he may have never intended on shaking things up as much as he has, he has embodied his role well wearing lots of black like all the best rebels do. I am here to tell you he is a rock star in and out of the water. (No seriously, he is really a rock star in the band Tomorrow's Tulips).

So my friends and family know that I did a really stupid thing last year. In an effort to get my son to sleep in his own bed I offered to build him a yellow submarine to sleep in. At the time, I had the greatest vision of the song "yellow submarine" by the Beatles playing while my little boy fell fast asleep inside his yellow sea vessel. But now I get the "where is my submarine" eye roll from a 5 year old. I am gonna build that damn bed if it kills me. I will have you all know that I am very good with power tools so it isn't as crazy as it sounds. The seagull illustration above, by Wayne Pate, will hang next to the sweet aquatic masterpiece. A connection with nature

Sometimes I miss being a kid and my connection to nature. I used to roll around in the dirt, climb trees and wander through the woods all alone. I am still deeply connected through the ocean but my days in the woods are over. This photo would have been on my wall as a little girl. I love women that look as if they haven't s lost the child within. Brigitte's hair looks disheveled and her clothes unimportant. Is she free and happy? Maybe not, maybe a stylist put this together, but she certainly looks that way. It is beautiful to me. I have come to realize that I like the bohemian look even if it is put together with great thought. Just home from a camping trip to Big Sur. It felt like the photos above. Like a trippy trek up a mystical coastline. I have washed my hair twice but the smell of campfire lingers on . . . and on. As an observer, I felt a powerful hippie energy there. After some research I learned that Big Sur was a major meeting spot in the 60's for those long haired, sun worshipping, feral, folk. :)

You were supposed to sing the title of this post to the tune of "white christmas." It is too early for bad jokes . . . you're right. Look at how the stove sits just waiting for me to cook upon it and the pink flowers call attention, as they should, against the white background. Now, the lounge chairs: make yourself a jasmine green tea and grab a Surfer's Journal or Dwell magazine and have a seat. Excuse me, where are the one of a kind, hand-made coffee mugs? I know they are behind one of those cabinet doors. I am guessing the surf racks are on the other side of the house next to the salt water pool and guest cottage.

Serge Gainsbourg epitomizes the word: artist. He was multi talented, working as a poet, musician, painter, actor and director. Most remember him as one of the worlds most influential musicians and for dating beauties such at the banged bombshell, Jane Birkin, above. Summer months are so frisky, don't you think? Some people enjoy summer. Others embody it. I have seen a lot of skin the last few days on the beach but the photo above gives me the greatest chuckle. Says Jane Birkin: "What should I bring out on the town? Hmmmm. My basket, my boobs, my musician and my bangs." You have to love people with confidence don't you? The world would be so boring without them.

I am going to start by painting the same words (love letters only) on my mailbox. Next I will leave a note that reads: "Mr. Postman/woman I am a mom of a little boy who comes home from pre-school with obscene amounts of art that cannot be bent, lunch-boxes that must be carried at a certain angle so things don't drip, sippy cups AND snack tins. At this time, I cannot carry junk mail, groceries and my little boys belongings from the car to the house. I end up staining the one shirt that I actually spent money on or dropping a piece of paper that is sure to be picked up by the wind before I can catch it. My son screams and darts after the waste paper you left because: the "trash will litter the earth if we let it fly away." All things still in hand, I have no choice but to chase my son who is trying to save the drifting grocery coupons that I will NEVER, EVER remember to use. I admit, there are simpler ways to carry things and they don't need to be carried at once. However, I also have A.D.D. so I usually forget any plan I came up with to help myself with this task. Therefore, I must accept, that I am an official failure at getting from the car to the house in one piece, without uttering a curse word or losing my sanity. Please help my self esteem by leaving this mailbox free of junk mail. In return I leave for you a lollipop." Love, Ashley

I spent the last week on vacation watching trees sway, fire flies dance through dark and my little boy dive into the swimming pool with unbridled excitement and silliness. As a youth I took so much time to think, now it is hard to really investigate myself because things are just too darn busy. However, last week, I got that chance & I realized something about myself. I realized how parenthood changed me when it shouldn't have. I realized that my true, wild, adventurous, rebellious, free thinking self is just as well suited for parenthood as this uber-responsible person I have become. It worked for a while & perhaps it was necessary when my little one was a baby. But as I watched this grown up little boy wiggle through the days with zest I realized it was time to introduce him to the original "me." Now the only problem is finding "her." I think I left her in Costa Rica or Indonesia or Mexico. I might have to take a few vacations to remember where she is. :) "Don't hold back" is my motto for 2010. What is yours?

A good portion of the world makes due without a way to transport themselves, their products, their children or their trash. These textiles were created in Turkmenistan (bottom image) and Uzbekistan (top image) using the Ikat dying method. Ikat is a near universal weaving style common to many world cultures, however, the word originates from Indonesia. Likely, it is one of the oldest forms of textile decoration. What fascinates me is how so many of the most noted designers today are borrowing from ancient traditions. Any of these patterns look familiar? They do to me. I would like to borrow this straw yurt AND the textiles . . . if you are going to gather inspiration might as well look to the best. These historical crafts are still relevant. Now that is true skill.

My take on Andy Davis Art

Today is a rare day. I have the explanation for my attachment to Andy Davis art. This quote gave me the understanding of what his work means to me.

"Art is a selective re-creation of reality according to an artist's metaphysical value-judgments. An artist recreates those aspects of reality which represent his fundamental view of man's nature. -Ayn Rand, 'Art and Cognition'

A quick glance at Andy's work tells you his soul still has faith in man. In this day and age, I find that both courageous and inspiring. I need that reminder from time to time. The reminder that somebody out there still believes in goodness. Knowing Andy personally backs up the theory of Rand. Andy can get frustrated too, but his soul is very child like and full of hope. Take another look at his work now, can you see it? Amazing how art speaks the language of the soul.

Stuart Haygarth's, "Tide" chandelier is based on the collection of "man made" debris that washed up on the Kent coastline. Haygarth has been collecting materials for many years and the work is still in progress. To visit his site, click here. I love his style in this photo, the glasses, just enough beard and a suit. There is a bit of a "rebel in a suit" quality that I love. Also, the second photo celebrates my love for a plain white t-shirt on a man. On second thought, a white t-shirt on a woman with jeans is equally great. Simple is the best, whether you are farming, running a business, decorating a home, or getting dressed in the morning. Simple almost always works. Right?

Well check out Sandy's Retaurant in Huntington Beach. It is part of the TS Restaurants chain who owns Kimo's, Duke's and Jake's Del Mar. Andy made their logo, tshirts, menu graphics & 3 huge paintings for their new casual beach cafe' on the sand in Huntington Beach. Make sure to stop by if you are near the pier and enjoy some great food. Their grand opening is scheduled for mid May but the doors are open now. The owners are great people, I worked for them years ago in Lahaina as a t-shirt girl and was happy that Andy had the chance to ad some "Ando" love to their new restaurant. Funny that I used to sell the t-shirts my husband now makes. I would sit in my booth and check the surf, not a bad job for a young surf rat. The owners are true surfers and obviously care deeply about the quality of their restaurants and the way they treat their staff. It was a true pleasure to do business with them. I watched a 60 minutes special on Jose' Andres three times in a row last night and must admit I was ever so charmed by his vibrant personality. From the minute I heard him speak about food I was enamored. He has a contagious passion about cooking that is all but lost in the majority of U.S. households. Born and raised in Spain he was schooled in culinary arts (by an accomplished Spanish chef) after dropping out of high school, now he teaches molecular gastronomy (breaking down of food molecules) on occasion at Harvard University. He owns L.A.'s "The Bazaar", along with 7 other restaurants. Located in Beverly Hills it is the only restaurant to get a 4star food review in the L.A. times. Meanwhile he volunteers in a Washinton D.C. soup kitchen just like he has always done, teaching the passion of cooking to the less fortunate. It is his goal to change food in America, wanting everyone to find love in fruits and vegetables that he does. I am with you Jose', food is dreamy & gorgeous. Lets all get back to quality rather than quantity with everything that we consume.

My Garden

Gardens are life giving reminders of the abundance of magic all around us. Surfing gives me my daily dose of heaven and so does my garden. I vow to spend the entire day pulling weeds & doing what it takes to surround my family with the beauty of vegetables & flowers. Sadly I neglected my patch for a while, but I am back. Dirty hands, earth, vibrant green colors, tomato hornworms, fresh tomato sauce & life lessons: the garden is the giver. I just have be present for the gift; it is hardly a fair trade. What is it like to be around surfing from day numero uno? I think Noah likes it. Check out the hang 10. Its all about the style baby, its all about the style. The new Beacon's crew will have some shredders for sure. Kayden, Kateline, Nolan, Madeline & Noah will have fun growing up with the water I think.
