Surfing?

What is the right board? What is the perfect amount of rocker? What is the appropriate approach? How many waves do you get without being a wave hog? When is my next surf trip? How long will I go? I am in the ponder phase of my surfing life. The ocean is ever changing, the equipment is always developing & my ideas and views on surfing are re-born every year. Then I realize that nothing can be known in an ever changing world. We all have a different attachment to the ocean & surfing anyway. By the time I think I have my own answers, my question has changed. Funny thing is . . . I do my best surfing when I am not struggling for answers but rather accepting that, for me, there are none. My surfing has to be a response everyday to the unique way I feel in the moment. The past years have deeply challenged me to be o.k. with my approach to wave riding. NEVER SURRENDER YOUR OWN TRUTH. Nobody knows why we do the things we do, but surely we must all have reasons. I have learned that lesson the hard way. Let's all paddle out today and be completely FREE in the big blue heaven, that is the only way we will ever be truly satisfied in our souls.

British Invasion.

Is the trend of using the British flag in modern art & home decor a way of paying homage to the arrival of the Rolling Stones, Beatles, the Kinks, the Who & many more legendary bands to the music scene. Any reference to that time in history is undoubtably cool.

Or is this trend a reflection of the fashion of that era? Which comes first fashion or the music? The chicken or the egg?

Our house has been taken over by the British this weekend. The breakfast table was filled with children saying "Mummy, could I please have another waffle?" So adorable to have friends in town with accents.

Billy Holiday the voice of heaven.

I watched a documentary on Billie Holiday last night, one of my all time favorite singers. She struggled greatly as a black artist in a time of racism and then died from a heroine addiction in her mid 40s. Such a beautiful voice for such a difficult life. I love the flowers in her hair, great style.

Buttons, one of my favorite surfers to watch, is known for charismatic surfing, unpredictability, creativity & flamboyance in the water.

This yellow door draws my attention the same way as the surf style of B. There is an element of colorful surprise, a totally unexpected moment of shock here. They really pulled that off? Wow!Designers & surfers who break rules, connect to the child within & take risks are the best. Being wild & free can be risky but when it comes together . . . it is legendary.

BRAVAIS ARMCHAIR

A collaborative project between furniture designer Liam Hopkins and artist Richard Sweeney at Lazerian studio, Manchester. The designers constrained themselves to the use of corrugated cardboard sourced locally from John Hargreaves’ factory in Stalybridge, which produces paper from recycled pulp using machinery originally installed in 1910.

I don't have much of a say around the house when it comes to music, Andy is the controller of all media, don't even try to fight it. I know, I know, it isn't fair. However, one must realize that Andy has introduced me to all the best things in life: a cherub son, gorgeous art, my true self, the Rich Pavel fish (surfboard) and last but not least, the very best music. Therefore, the time came many years ago for me to shut up and listen (VERY RARE OCCURENCE no other male has accomplished this ). I had to hear to the Smiths for a month straight, well I tolerated it for a month straight and then argument arose on Neptune Avenue in Leucadia, "THIS BAND IS DEPRESSING" I BLURTED OUT. "ENOUGH." Andy's hand blocked the power switch. Then this song came on, I played it over and over until I could sing along.

But why was I bouncing about singing about a girl in a coma, how twisted right? It was like being in Yoga class chanting that "Om shala shala" prayer. You know you like it, it feels good, it sounds good, but what the hell am I saying?

Turns out the yoga prayer was all positive & the girlfriend in a coma song lends its name to the 1998 novel "Girlfriend in a Coma" by Douglas Coupland. No less twisted but now I know the origination of the lyrics at least.

The song created a scuffle between Morrisey who insisted on recording the song & Johnny Marr who did not want to do so. Soon after, Marr left the band. Leave it up to me to love THAT song. Even after I agree to be educated, the nerd in me will not die.
