Dalai Lama meets with Obama tomorrow

China is urging the US government to cancel plans for President Barack Obama to meet next week with Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. The White House Thursday confirmed that President Obama will meet the Dalai Lama on February 18, despite China's objections.
With China breathing down Obama's neck, the decision cannot be easy. Furthermore the desire to send a political message may not have been the intention for the meeting at all; but that is what it has become. All of a sudden the decision to proceed with the meeting is more significant than the meeting itself. I feel that many nations have been hiding from the Tibet issue for a long time, not wanting to "wake a sleeping giant". But, as momma always says: "Do the right thing, no matter what." In this situation, we have to take a stand for Tibet. It is a bad time for us to ruffle feathers, but doing the right thing when it is hard is what proves our character. Obama may have won a little more respect from me today and finally I see the future for Tibet looking a little more hopeful. Fate has a way of bringing sunlight into unexpected areas at unexpected times. Very interesting.
